“Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life’s most civilized pleasures.”~Michael Broadbent
Our Milanese amico, Capo Speedo (he loves his Speedos) is being shipped off to Mozambique after 5 years in Dubai. For his farewell we gather together for a brunch at Karma Kafe. We select outdoor seating at the lovely terrace with awesome views of the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall.
The beverages menu includes wine, bottled beer, house spirits, and two cocktails (mimosa and negroni). Yet again I am disappointed by the lack of cocktails, however; service is quick and efficient.
The unlimited a-la-carte menu is divided into nine sections. From the Raw Karma the seafood tartare and Japanese tuna pizza emerge as table favorites. From the Small Dishes I particularly enjoy the shrimp tacos and crispy calamari. The majority of the table wisely chooses to skip the Soup & Salad section. The nigiri and maki are good but not great. For Main Dishes the champions are the flank steak, glazed salmon, and wok fried chicken. Both the Karvery and Skewers dishes fail to shine compared to the mains. For desserts everybody really enjoyed the chocolate fondant.
Indoors the restaurant is practically deserted. Given the dark setting it is understandable that nobody would want to spend a day time brunch in pitch darkness. The terrace is small and packed. What I find peculiar is the failure to provide a DJ or live band to enhance the experience. Alas at 3 o’clock we polish off our remaining drinks and head off to the nearest after brunch for Capo’s final dance off. Arrivederci!
